Not long ago, Muynak was Karakalpakstan’s largest port and the center of its fishing industry.

KHIVA – DASHOGUZ (TURKMENISTAN) – KUNYA-URGENCH – DAMLA (250 km, 4 hours)Today we’ll explore the inner town of Khiva – Ichan-Kala, surrounded by massive walls. This ancient city preserves centuries-old palaces, mosques, madrasahs, mausoleums, minarets, caravanserais, and baths that create a unique open-air museum. There are more than 400 traditional houses and about 60 monuments here. Since 1969, Ichan-Kala has been recognized as a historical and architectural reserve.
Key sites include the Kunya-Ark fortress, built by Muhammad Arang Khan in the 17th century; the Kalta Minar Minaret; and the Tash-Khauli Palace – a remarkable example of Khorezmian architecture from the 1830s.
After exploring the city, we drive to the Shavat border crossing between Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
After lunch, at 16:00 we will be met at the Dashoguz checkpoint, after which we head to Kunya-Urgench (UNESCO). Here we will see the Mausoleum of Najmuddin Kubra, the Mausoleum of Sultan Ali, the Kutlug Timur Minaret, the Mausoleum of Sultan Tekesh, and the Mausoleum of Il Arslan. We will then continue on to see the Darvaza Gas Crater — to marvel at the fantastic view, feel the heat, and listen to the wind and the sound produced by this enormous furnace.
We will spend the night in yurts not far from the crater.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner Accommodation included: overnight in a yurt near the craterDay 5. November 4, 2026 (Wednesday). DARVAZA – HORSE FARM – MAUSOLEUM OF TURKMENBASHI – ASHGABAT (250 km, 3.5 hours of travel)In the morning, we observe the crater and take photographs. Nearby, we will also visit two more craters — one mud crater and one filled with turquoise-colored water.
After breakfast, we return to Ashgabat and check into the hotel.
After lunch, we will visit a horse farm to meet the pride of the Turkmen people — the Akhal-Teke horses. A traditional tea break, a short Akhal-Teke horse show, photo opportunities, and a tour of the stables.
We will also visit the Mausoleum of Turkmenbashi, the first president of Turkmenistan, and the unique mosque located nearby — decorated not with verses from the Quran, but with the sayings of Turkmenbashi.
To conclude this eventful day — a dinner in traditional style with a cultural show.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner Accommodation included: Sport Hotel in AshgabatDay 6. November 5, 2026 (Thursday). ASHGABAT – TURKMENBASHI – KARA BOGAZ GOL – YANGIKALA CANYONIn the morning, transfer to the airport for the domestic flight Ashgabat – Turkmenbashi at 6:20 (flight duration: 1 hour; schedule subject to change).
Upon arrival, we will stroll along the promenade, have a cup of coffee at a local café, and head north to see a remarkable natural site — a stunning lake that was once a bay of the Caspian Sea. "Kara Bogaz" translates as "black throat" or "black trap." The waters of the Caspian Sea used to rush through a narrow strait — between 200 and 1,000 meters wide — at great speed, reaching up to 1 meter per second, pouring into Kara Bogaz. Where the water went was a mystery that gave rise to much fear about this place. Today we know that the lake is surrounded by scorching desert, and the water simply evaporates.
Here we will have lunch, then continue to another breathtaking natural site — Yangikala Canyon, known as the "Grand Canyon of Central Asia." It is a strikingly beautiful location featuring formations of pink, white, and yellow sandstone, sweeping views, and a captivating rock formation known as the "crocodile's mouth." The canyon is located in the northwest of Turkmenistan in the Balkan Province. "Yangi-Kala" means "fiery fortresses" in Turkmen — a name derived from the predominant red color of the rock faces and cliffs that make up the massifs. The canyons are an incredibly beautiful sight, and particularly stunning at sunset, when everything around is bathed in fiery hues.
Here we will set up our tent camp and prepare dinner over an open fire.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner Accommodation included: tentsDay 7. November 6, 2026 (Friday). YANGIKALA – BALKANABAT (NEBITDAG) – DURUN – NOHUR – KOW-ATA – ASHGABAT (600 km)After breakfast, we will visit the Gozli Ata shrine, where the tomb of a revered local saint is located — a respected Sufi who lived in the early 14th century.
We will then make a brief stop in Balkanabat, also known as Nebitdag ("Oil Mountain"), the capital of Turkmenistan's oil and gas industry. The city's symbol — a monument in the shape of a derrick silhouetted against a mountain — says it all. After a short tour of the city's main sights, we drive to the village of Durun (approximately 4–5 hours). Here we will visit a local family whose household has been engaged in carpet weaving for generations. Visitors can watch Turkmen women weave carpets by hand and learn the fascinating details of this ancient craft.
After lunch, we continue to Nohur. The road to this "paradise on earth" is long and demanding — climbs, descents, and winding mountain roads. But all the hardships of the journey are forgotten at the sight of this rare and breathtaking place, enclosed on four sides by high mountains.
In Nohur, there is an ancient plane tree whose hollow is large enough to fit several people inside. On the outskirts of the village is a special wishing spot — Gyz-Bibi, a narrow cleft in the rock that locals believe to be one of the doorways to paradise. Make a wish, and it is sure to come true. There is also an unusual cemetery where all the gravestones are decorated with the horns of argali sheep.
We will visit the underground lake of Kov-Ata, located 107 km from Ashgabat. "Kov-Ata" in Turkmen means "Father of Caves." At first glance, this underground space resembles a magnificent amphitheater. The floor of the cave is covered with lumps of dissolved limestone (stalagmites) and filled with warm, flowing water of an emerald color. The water maintains a constant temperature of 33–37°C; swimming is permitted for no more than 30–40 minutes.
We then return to Ashgabat. Check-in at our Sport Hotel and rest.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinnerAccommodation included: Sport Hotel in AshgabatDay 8. November 7, 2026 (Saturday). ASHGABAT – NISA – NATIONAL MUSEUM – RETURN FLIGHTToday we will visit ancient Nisa, which was once the capital of the Parthian Empire. In 2007, the ancient fortresses of Nisa were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding universal value — recognized not only as cultural monuments, but also as cultural landscapes.
We will then visit the National Museum of Turkmenistan, which houses unique collections of paintings, graphic art, and sculpture, encompassing not only Turkmen fine art but also masterworks by Russian and Western European artists.
After lunch, transfer to the airport for the international flight home.
